Our Engagement Story: Empire State of Mind

This is a very special story, it was the beginning of our little family. My husband James had asked me to meet him at our apartment at 6 pm on Valentines Day 2017. I didn’t know where we were going I was just told to dress warm.

I arrived at our apartment and we headed out to a heliport that was about 5 minutes away. I was nervous because I figured we were going to be up in the air soon. Our hellicopter arrived and we rushed to get in. My husband had chartered it for two people so there was only the pilot and a photographer.

The photographer introduced herself saying she was with the company taking photos. She asked if it was ok if she took photos of us too. I was suspicious because I thought it was weird she just so happened to be on our ride when I knew James wanted us to be the only ones on the ride

We flew around the city, we started around 30th street by the waterfront and headed to the statue of liberty, by the bridges of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The views were incredible. Soon we headed towards the Empire State Building which was red for Valentines Day. I started getting emotional and was trying to fight off tears. I am a hopeless romantic and couldn’t help but think of one of my favorite movies, “Sleepless in Seattle.”

In the movie Sleepless in Seattle, two strangers arrange to meet on the top of the Empire State Building on Valentine’s day. It features a scene where the Empire State Building has a big red heart on it. I find this to be one of the most romantic movies of all time. At that moment I was thinking about how lucky I was to be up there with my sweetheart and how lucky I was to have found the love of my life.

We kept hovering over the Empire State Building and I could tell my husband was trying to get my attention (since we could only hear each other through the headphones we had been given). I didn’t turn around right away because I was trying to dry the tears with my hand.

When I turned around my husband was holding out a ring. He said something along the lines of “the real reason we are here is….” and then I pretty much blacked out. I know he asked me to marry him and I said, “YES!” It was amazing! I was so happy and ugly crying I’m sure. We enjoyed the rest of the ride and I was just over the moon with joy.

Everything about his proposal was just perfect! We finished the ride and went to a restaurant called Cannibal, where we had our first date. It was such a beautiful moment. This was the beginning of the life we have now. In two short years, we got married and become parents to a sweet beautiful little girl that brightens up each day.

Thank you for reading my engagment story.
